The Role of State Medicaid Programs in Improving the Value of the Healthcare System

Across the country, states, insurers, providers and consumers are driving value into the health care system by transforming the way care is paid for, with the goal of improving the quality and cost of the nation’s health care system. Our survey of state Medicaid programs (n=34), a sample of Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs) (n=5), and supplemental interviews and research discuss how state Medicaid programs are contributing to this transformation.
